47th Street.
A directory of the diamond and jewellery trade that did something rare: it audited its own file, threw out 953 generated records and printed why. In New York, its home market, what is left is thin.

1What it is, and who it is for
47th Street lists the jewellery trade (dealers and cutters, showrooms and makers, bespoke ateliers and setters, bridal houses, gold buyers and refiners, watch dealers), starting on New York's West 47th Street and running through Miami, Los Angeles, Antwerp, Dubai, Geneva, Hong Kong, London, Ramat Gan, Mumbai, Surat, Singapore and Zurich. Every entry is marked by how well it is known: confirmed against a fetched source, listed, or blocked. An audited-register page beside it accounts for what was removed, and the whole register prints as a PDF book.
It is for buyers looking for a jeweller, setter, refiner or watch specialist, and for anyone who wants to know which listings were actually checked.
2How it works
There is no live upstream. The register is one file, register.json, of 677 entries. The directory's data file, businesses.js, is generated from it by mkbusinesses.py, and every record carries its verification state and, where confirmed, the source page it was checked against (businesses.js 1–7). figures-live.js counts the front-page numbers at draw time instead of having them typed in (figures-live.js 1–12).
The audited page runs app.js, which fetches register.json and counts every number from it (app.js 1–20). The audit record, register-meta.json, gives the arithmetic: 1,410 source records, 953 removed, 220 added. The removal signals are printed too: one phone number shared by forty 'businesses', names built from a first name, an adjective and a trade, and invented accreditation claims. book.php lays the register out as a US Letter PDF in which no listing is split across a page break (book.php 1–12), and corrections sent through contact.php are written to disk before they are mailed.
3The test
We fetched the pages and the register from the local 537 copy, parsed register.json and matched it against the audit record, and generated the PDF book.
Loaded the directory (at 20:10:49), the audited page and the register.
Directory HTTP 200, 76,188 bytes; audited.html 71,388 bytes; register.json 264,344 bytes.
Parsed register.json.
677 entries: 518 confirmed, 146 listed, 13 blocked. Miami 232, New York 172, Hong Kong 39, London 39, Los Angeles 30, Antwerp 29, Singapore 28, Geneva 21, Mumbai 21, Dubai 19, Ramat Gan 18, New York Area 14, Zurich 13, Surat 2. 80 addresses on West 47th Street. The audit arithmetic holds: 1,410 − 953 + 220 = 677.
Generated the book, whole and New York only.
application/pdf, 774,109 bytes, 73 pages, in 0.05 s; the New York book 181,828 bytes.
4Against the field
Each rival was read on its own pages on the test day. Pencil marks what it does better; red, where 47th Street goes further.
Seybold Jewelry Building directory
seyboldjewelry.com · checked 27 September 2026, 20:15 UTC
The official tenant directory of the Seybold Jewelry Building in downtown Miami, which describes ten floors and over 300 in-house jewellers, each listed with floor, suite and telephone and indexed A to Z.
In pencil
- It is the building's own authoritative list, down to floor and suite.
- It covers that building's whole roster of over 300; 47th Street holds 232 entries for all of Miami.
In red
- One search across thirteen markets and six departments, with a verification state on every entry.index.html 814; register.json
- A printable, paginated book of the whole register or one market: 73 pages, measured.book.php 1–12
Diamond District Store Directory
jewelers.nyc · checked 27 September 2026, 20:15 UTC
A guide to New York's Diamond District jewellers with ratings, reviews and rankings, product categories and a search box, run by Break Free Publishing LLC.
In pencil
- Recommendations, ratings and reviews that help a shopper choose, which 47th Street deliberately does not give.
- Browsing by product, such as engagement rings or fine watches, rather than by trade department.
In red
- It states that nobody pays to be listed or ranked. The jewelers.nyc page we fetched has a 'Specially Promoted' section, and we found no statement there about how promotion is decided.index.html 815
- It publishes what it removed and why.register-meta.json
- Twelve markets beyond New York.register.json
5Where it falls short
- Thin at home. Of 172 New York entries, 51 are confirmed and 116 are listed without a re-check; 56 carry a website.
- An out-of-date catalogue line. labs.llc's own summary still says '1,410 listings … 705 of them on 47th Street', while the register holds 677 entries, 80 of them on West 47th.
- Static. No live feed, opening hours, reviews, prices or photos; it changes only when a new audited file replaces the old one.
- Uneven coverage. Surat 2, Zurich 13, Miami 232.
6The verdict
47th Street is worth using for the one thing directories rarely give you, a stated evidence level on every row; but in New York, its home market, 116 of 172 rows are still only 'listed', and the tool's own catalogue line overstates its size.
- In red ink
- A published self-audit, a verification state per entry, figures that count themselves, no paid placement, and a PDF book.
